On March 3, 2009 President Barack Obama formally nominated Julius Genachowski as the new Chairman of the FCC. Numerous trade associations and public interest groups have supported this pick, including Public Knowledge and the American Cable Association ("ACA"). Through his business experience and previous work at the FCC, Genachowski will bring a wealth of talent to the Commission.
With one Republican seat open and speculation that Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein (D) will not be renominated, but perhaps moved to head the Department of Agriculture's new broadband program, the face of the Commission is poised for dramatic change. Ajit Pai and Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) may be in the running for the Republican slot. South Carolina public utilities official Mignon Clyburn could possibly round-out the Democratic majority.
